“The shape and weight of the equipment we handle poses significant safety challenges for our employees – so we were experiencing a range of manual handling injuries, especially when loading and unloading vehicles. That’s why there was a need for fundamental behavioural change.
We wanted to develop a safety-first culture to help drive this change and needed a training product that was industry-recognised with a strong brand – which is why we chose IOSH.
All our area managers attended the four-day Managing Safely course. Meanwhile, all new colleagues that join our HSS Training Academy attend the Working Safely course – because we’re aiming for the ‘safety first’ message to be taken into the workplace from the moment they arrive.
Our strategy continues to deliver great results. The RIDDOR rate at HSS continues to fall with overall accident rates reduced by 12% year-on-year and new bump caps helping reduce head injuries in 2014 by 50%.
Driver injuries are down 40% year-on-year, with a 50% reduction in hand injuries due to the introduction of a new range of gloves.
