Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19 May) in the UK is hosted by the Mental Health Foundation and focuses on the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing.
At any one time, one in six workers experience mental health problems such as stress, depression and anxiety.
Increasing people’s awareness of mental health, reducing stigma, and promoting and facilitating early help-seeking are recognised as key strategies for a mentally healthy workplace.
We know that being in work can be one of the best things for health, as long as the work is ‘good’. Employers should help keep their workers well and healthy by making sure that work isn’t carried out in conditions that lead to stress, MSDs or other health problems.
IOSH publishes a range of free technical guidance. Our guidance literature is designed to support and inform members and motivate and influence health and safety stakeholders.
We’re supporting Mental Health Awareness Week by highlighting these resources and raising awareness of the importance of good mental health and wellbeing.
- IOSH’s Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing course provides practical advice and tools for managers to help create a healthy and productive place of work.
- In conjunction with Management Today, IOSH produced a white paper to provide guidance on the role of line managers in promoting positive mental health
- Research with the University of Nottingham looked into the implementation, use and utility of mental health first aid in the workplace
